We Empower Young Women

Mission

Mercy High School is a diverse educational community, founded by the Sisters of Mercy, focusing on academic excellence and inspiring young girls to become confident women of Mercy who embody faith, knowledge and compassionate service.

Vision

Mercy High School will be the most welcoming, inclusive and diverse faith-based girls school in Omaha, with a strong focus on academic excellence to ensure that every girl reaches her full potential. Using the mission as the foundation, our Board of Directors developed a Strategic Plan that wants success for our students, every day.

There are three-student-centric goals that are part of this plan:
  • Enhancing our academic offerings to meet the needs of today's student while here and after graduation.
  • Integration technology throughout the learning process.
  • Ensuring financial and facility strength through stakeholder engagement.

Our History

A Passion for Teaching

All Sisters of Mercy trace their roots to their founder, Mother Catherine McAuley of Dublin, Ireland. In September 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy, as a place to shelter and educate women and girls. In 1831, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy.

Their passion for teaching is what brought the Sisters of Mercy to Omaha in 1864. They have been part of Omaha’s educational community ever since. The Sisters opened the first Catholic school in the area at Mount St. Mary Seminary, located at 24th and St. Mary’s.

That legacy of academic excellence and a faith-based education continues with our current faculty and staff who are committed to the values of Catherine.

At the Heart of Historic Morton Meadows

After years of planning and careful design, Mercy High School officially opened its doors at 48th & Woolworth on November 2, 1955. Nearly 675 students attended classes that year: over 150 students from St. John's, over 300 from St. Mary's, and over 200 in Mercy’s first freshmen class.

Some things have changed through the years. The school has undergone renovations. Some things have remained the same. Historic Morton Meadows has always been our home. From here, we have welcomed young women from every area zip code for more than 60 years.
